The latest backroom icon to be anthologised in Ace’s splendid Producers &
Songwriters series is Jerry Ragovoy, a giant of early-Sixties soul
productions who specialised in appropriately giant emotions rendered through
giant arrangements.
Operating here in alliance with Scottish composer Malcolm Lindsay, Willard
Grant Conspiracy’s prime mover Robert Fisher has created a song cycle about
faith and doubt.
This follow-up to the 2006 album To Find Me Gone is a covers album featuring
tracks originally recorded by some of Vetiver leader Andy Cabic’s favourite
artists.
Despite the porkie in the title – “Your Host Bob Dylan” actually makes no
audible appearance on this 2CD compilation of tracks played on his radio
show – this is still a superb anthology of folk, blues, rock’n’roll and
country, ranging from the 1930s blues of Leroy Carr & Scrapper Blackwell
to The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army”.
